I have been on a search for the perfect space/cosmos-based mmo. I have tried the star trek game, and it's ok. But it's fairly quaint, honestly. Such has been the case with pretty much all of that type of game I have found out there. I have yet to find a space mmo that lives up to the possibilities and concepts that I have seen out there.

Here is some of what I want from a space mmo, what I think would make the game near-perfect:

progression/level concept - I think that xp in a space-based game should be more for the ship itself, and less on the individual character. The progression of the game can be based on the ability of the ship itself, and it's abilities. Individual character development can still have an xp concept. I don't think a game could survive without such a thing.

interstellar travel concept - like most other space-based games I have played, different ship specs and engine characteristics should dictate the ability to travel. But make the travel more taxing, trying to simulate the realism of cosmic distances. Space-folding, worm-holes, things like that are concepts that could be added to the game after a few expansions. However, I think that travel from on side of the galaxy, or the known universe, is something that should take 3 minutes. Make it taxing to travel, similar to how EQ was originally.

individual play concept - The 2 elements of individual play that you could add are a) the idea of solo space travel, for whatever adventure you want to provide to someone like that, if people want to play like that. You could add robots to the game to facilitate such a thing. And then there is b) playing on the surface of a planet. You would have to add the ability to determine if a person could survive on the surface, and then decide if there is the possibility of life on that planet. At that point, you could add the idea of PvE, and add some more individualization of the character to accommodate that type of scenario.

group play concept - I think the best idea for group play in a space based game would be to have a "guild" structure to work on a ship together. You could even plan events for the guild on the main ship throughout the week, and have a hangar for people to be able to take their personal ship when they want the group/individual play. Or perhaps have deepspace adventures on the main ship, and people that can't play during that type of guild event is in a "cryostasis" on the ship while everyone else does their part for that event.

Those are just some of the ideas that I think would add to a great game. The graphics are a given. But for a space-based mmo to really succeed, you need to add some elements that make it fun, fascinating, and semi-realistic.

I'd love to be on a conceptual team for a game like that. Maybe the computer geniuses in the guild could get together and make a game like that. That would be cool.
