OK bookworms and casual readers... who is your favorite author?

Short and sweet or go into detail -- either way.

My favorite would be Roger Zelazny.

Rob Thomas (sp?), hands down. "Rats Saw God" is the best book I've ever read. Slave Day is also a really good one. However, all of his books are a VERY good read.

Isaac Asimov, for making science fiction read like a mystery novel, for making fantasy seem like history.

Many of the same faves as others posted, with the addition of Julian May. If you haven't read the Saga of Pliestocine Exile (The Many Colored Land, The Golden Torc, The Nonborn King) and all the sequels and prequls to that trilogy, ya gotta.

What's up with everyone liking Raymond Feist? I read his first trilogy a long long time ago and remembered liking it. Is there more I'm missing?

I like George R R Martin, Robin Hobb, Tolkien, R A Salvatore, and the guy who wrote the black company books, cant remember his name though. If you guys are really into the fantasy thing, you have got to check out the George R R Martin series "A Song of Ice and Fire" it is going to be a 7 part series, only 3 books out now and they are awesome, in my opinion, the best fantasy books i have ever read, the fourth book is in the process of being edited the last time i checked his site, i have been waiting forever for it to come out, but the books are so long you can stand to wait because they are so good. If you have alot of time on your hands and enjoy a complicated plot and a ton of characters to keep up with check out a"A Game of Thrones" the first book in his series.

I just bought the Riftwar Saga a week ago. First two books are toast. I hadn't re-read them since their original publication, so I forgot how excellent they are. I halfway through Silverthorn now. Anita is about to get the shaft. :princess:

I have a hard time believing that the newer series is as good, but I will be trying it.

Since it wasn't mentioned here, I'll toss it out:
Patricia McKillip's Harpist in the Wind series, which is
1. The Riddle-Master of Hed (1976)
2. Heir of Sea and Fire (1977)
3. Harpist in the Wind (1979)

Haven't read them in ages, but loved them in high school.

And Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card *is* the greatest Fantasy/SF book of all time. Well, that or Asimov's Foundation trilogy, or Asimov's Robots of Dawn (trilogy or like 87 books, depending on if you count all the tie-ins). Or Lord of the Rings. Or Anne McAffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. Or Frank Herbert's Dune.

You all have expanded my reading list by a good bit... my head thanks you, but not my WALLET !

hmmm..lets see

Marion Zimmer Bradley for Mists of Avalon and the Darkover series
Anne McAffery for the Pern series
Piers Anthony for The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Steven King, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker for things that go bump in the night.

These are just some that immediately come to mind.

Currently I am reading the Wizards First Rule series (on book 2) by Terry Goodkind and am on book 6 of The Weel of Time series.

Tolkien and Robert Jordan are my favorite authors so far. I will probably like more when I read them, but I'm still catching up to the list of books Bawd has introduced me to. :smooch:

BTW, I'm reading the Wheel of Time series right now, so please don't give the plot away! :shh:

Don't worry, you'll have about 8 years to keep re-reading that same plot over and over. Apparently Jordan never gets bored of it!

Piers Anthony- He is my all time favorite. The Xanth series rocked and there are many books to read in that ongoing series. Such a magical world with good stories, a must read. Just do it you will thank me later.

Piers Anthony- The Incarnation of Imortality Series, Wow.. a powerful series on the imortals who run the world, Thantos (death), Chronos, Gae, the god of war.. very powerful series, very intersting, good reading. Read "On a Pale Hoarse" the best in the series, you get to see a facsinating view of the postion of the grim reaper and what he does.

Margret Wies, Tracey Hickman- My secnod Favorite pair of authors. The "Dragon Lance" Series is a must read also. Do yourself a favor and read them. I remember staying up till 3 or 4 in the morning just to keep myself in the story, on a work night. The first time I ever really laughed while reading a book was reading about Tasselfhof in this series.

Fiest- also is a good writer with the "Magician Apprentace".

Christopher Stashef- "Her magisties wizard" is an awesome read as well. Just read it, you will thank me later.

Hienlin is intersting but hard to follow- Friday, Stranger in a strange land.

Hemingway- Great reading but usually sad.

I cant belive, that I am stillthe only person who has gave Geroge R.R. Martin a try? man reading his books is like watching a movie except you read it insted of watch it, I know alot of authors are really good, I have read very few book where I thought I could do better, seein as I am not a author but I do love to read, but you are really just cheating yourself you you do not read his books. Ok let me put it like this, if you know someone with these books and you can read the firs 3 chapters, and are not wanting to read your eyes out, then they are not for you, otherwise, buy all his books in hardback and watch for the 4th book due out anytime now, and enjoy yourself.

Well, it's been a long time since I posted this. But this thread is entitled "Favorite author". George R. R. Martin has some excellent politico-drama in his "Game of Thrones" series. Definitely worth reading. I'm waiting for "Feast for Crows" to come out in paperback. I have too much reading material as it is to justify $22 for a book :)

I never did get around to my "recommended reading" list. I'll have to do that sometime.

Zelazny is still my favorite author. He can weave a tale of action and drama, come up with the most fantastic situations, and sometimes his prose reads like poetry. His style is consistent, yet it covers so much territory it's like reading three different kinds of fiction. Rest in peace, Roger..

Hands down my favorite author has to be Edgar Rice Borroughs. It was his books that brought me into the world of fantasy and the subsequent 25+ years of reading and playing D&D.

John Carter of Mars books are being re-released very good read.

Hands down, David and Leigh Eddings, for their Belgariad and Mallorean series, as well as so many of their other series out there.

Bertrice Small - Prolific historical romance author.

Sylvia Browne - While some may laugh and point at her as some kind of psychic foolishness, her books are primarily spiritual in nature and take the "live and let live" approach to life. I find her writing easy to read and very appealing.

Maya Angelou - Her uplifting books and poems are worth taking the time to read.

Piers Anthony, Terry Brooks, Mercedes Lackey, Terry Goodkind to name a few more.

I LOVED the Sword of Truth series, and I was through book 3 when I had to stop pleasure reading in favor of college. I am told there are now 7 books in the series. The evolving saga of Kahlan and Richard Rahl were a source of fascination for me when reading this series. I can't wait to find out what direction the books have take these two main characters.

They tie with several authors for top spot for sure.

I am having trouble with the live and let live philosophy atm.

Piers Anthony, Terry Brooks, Mercedes Lackey, Terry Goodkind to name a few more.

Can easily agree and add Asimov and some Orson Scott Card.

Robert Feist can't really be beat and I will toss in Robert Jordan if you ignore his wordiness.

For real time : Ayn Rand - Atlas Shrugged / Fountainhead etc etc etc

this should be renamed or started over as a " some of your top picks for authors and their books"

It is just flat out impossible to call a very best. Each has its own virtues.

And add Roger Zelzany to my list of freak writers with a twisted mind. His Amber series is just wildly terrific.

Elizabeth Moon for her The Deeds of Paksenarion books is totally awesome (Elizabeth Moon for dang near all else needs to go find a job outside of the writing field.)

The Honor Harrington novelettes are absolutely out of this world. I think they are Weber for author but not sure.

Miles Vorkosigan.... Lois Mcmaster Bujold
