OK, first off I will say that F Paul Wilson is by far my favorite author. If you pick up any Repairman Jack book, I believe you will see why.
Usually I buy signed first editions of his books, but somehow Midnight Mass slipped under the radar for me. I would read his message boards and hear all these reviews of it and sit there wondering what they were talking about.
If you like Salem's Lot, don't even bother reading farther, just go out and find a copy of this book. In the forward of the book, FPW says how dissatisfied he's become over the years with "the tortured romantic aethetes who have been passing lately for vampires." By this, he mainly is refering to authors like Ann Rice who have romanticized vampires (there is one scene in the book where the vampires say how they find Ann Rice's books to be rather humorous). Midnight Mass turns things back to the way they should be and in turn, it also is one of the best horror novels I've read in quite a long time.
When the books starts, you find out that vampires have emerged from their world of darkness and taken control of most of the world. To keep control, they offer promises to people to turn them after ten years of indentured servatude in return for turning in human's to either be bled out or used as "cattle" for their blood lust. It takes place six months after the vampires have attacked the eastern US and taken control. The human's that are still alive hide out in their house's and pray that the "cowboys" (the vampires day servants) don't find them.
Parts of the story is predictable, but there are a few twists in the book that did catch me by suprise. Each character in the book goes through at least one traumatic experience.
Overall, it's one very good book and any fan of vampires should enjoy the story.
