Peter Gabriel has been one of those artists that I've only been peripherally aware of, but he's been around forever. I remember growing up and hearing "In Your Eyes" (from the 80's classic Say Anything), "Solsbury Hill", "Sledge Hammer" (used as a theme song to the ill-fated TV series of the same name), and "Shock the Monkey".

His videos have all been bizarre and creative, but I never knew what kind of performer he was until I recorded and watched him live in concert. The footage was filmed in Milan, and I have to say if you are interested in music and art, this concert is an amazing example of music meets performance art.

The sets and lighting play as much a role as the music and the performers in his show. Elaborate stage sets, including a large plastic "Zorb" ball, a stage in-the-round that rotates in the center of the audience, a bicycle, a flashing light suit, and more weirdness. The music quality is excellent, and the video is well edited, providing continual point of view changes, thanks I'm sure to the extremely high tech stage and theater setup.

His music isn't intended to be "pop" music; there are very few tracks that feature catchy refrains and simple ideas. His compositions are emotionally involving and intelligently written. I think Gabriel's commitment to his art is demonstrated very clearly in the enthusiasm and evocativeness of the songs he plays, and in how he strives so hard to make every piece a unique entity with its own performance style.

Gabriel shows respect to his co-performers (one of whom is his daughter Melanie I believe) and to the audience. He thanks them, he speaks to them, he performs for them.

I recorded this particular performance off of the INHD channel that I get through my digital HD cable tier on Time Warner. It is also available on DVD.

For Angie:

In your eyes

Love I get so lost, sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away
I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

All my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes

Love, I don't like to see so much pain

I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

And all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
the heat I see in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes

Not fair making me cry, when you are too far away to dry my eyes.

My baby!
